Surfing and Holidaying In Perth

At any time of the year there is a part of Western Australia sure to be bathed in warm sunshine. Powdery white beaches stretch the length of the coast, and the ocean dazzles with sunlit shades of blue.


We have some great surf beaches and reef breaks with in 15min of Perth CBD, the famous Cottesloe beach, Scarborough beach, Isolators reef to name a few.


World class breaks like Margret River, big barrelling beach breaks of Lancelin or the tropical warm waters in the north west Narloo out of Exmouth, all in reach if you have a car or four wheel drive and have the time to spare.

Perth Surfing Breaks

Surf Holidays In Perth Scarborough Beach
Scarborough is Perth's closest surf break, just a short 15 minute drive west from the heart of Perth city.
It has some of the best beach breaks up and down the coast.

 

In winter when the banks and swells are high it can get dangerous and more suited to the experienced surfer.


Summer time like many of the Perth metro beach breaks it can get very straight and dumpy. Scarborough beach has great grassed areas with barbecues, many restaurants and Cafes and public change rooms. Surf Life Savers are regularly on patrol making sure surfers and swimmers are safe.

 

In summer it is suitable for all levels of surfers up to 2.5m.

Brighton Beach
Just south of Scarborough  is a beach break which is similar to Scarborough surf breaks. Tends to hold up a little better in winter when large swells and good banks. It is a good fun wave.

Trigg Island
Trigg Island beach is home to one of Perth’s best surf breaks. It is a Reef break which runs into a beach break at what is affectionately known as the point. Trigg also has several beach breaks which continue all the way down to Scarborough.


On a warm summer’s day, Trigg Island beach swarms with surfers and boogie boarders making the most of the reef break just offshore. Inshore, swimmers enjoy the turquoise water and pure white sand. Trigg Island beach features grassed areas with barbecues, a kiosk, restaurant and public change rooms. Surf Life Savers are regularly on patrol making sure surfers and swimmers are safe.

 

Trigg is suitable for all levels of surfers.

Cottesloe Beach
Is Perth's most famous beach and is one of the best places to watch the sun set into the Indian Ocean, especially over a glass of Western Australia’s award winning wine.

 

Cottesloe is a left hand beach break and on big swells breaks off the Cottesloe groyne and gives good protection in the prevailing south west winds. Cottesloe’s crystal clear waters, regular swell and fun atmosphere make it popular with swimmers, body-boarders and surfer’s.


Cottesloe Beach is about a 15 minute drive from Perth. Regular Transport buses run to Cottesloe and it’s about a 600 metre walk from the Cottesloe Train Station.

Just to the south of Cottesloe Beach on the southern side of the Groyne there is three reef breaks, the cove, which is a right hand break which is more suitable on a mid to high tide due to reef. Seconds which is a left hand break and like the Cove is more suitable on a mid to high tide. Then Isolators reef which is Longboarder heaven.


Isolators has both left and right hand break and is a fun wave on large and smaller swells up to 2m.

Mandurah
40 minutes drive south of Perth is the resort town of Mandurah. Mandurah has lots to offer has great grassed areas with barbecues, many restaurants and Cafes and public change rooms. Surf Life Savers are regularly on patrol on several beaches making sure surfers and swimmers are safe.


There is arround 8 surf breaks surrounding Mandurah within 15 minutes of the City Centre. Surf Beach just to the north at Secret Harbour is Perth's best beach break a real swell magnet with left and rights for arround 1km.On a big swell above 2m is not suitable for beginners.

 

To the south of Mandurah there are several reef breaks, which are great for longboards and short. Avalon Point, left hand and holds big swell. Cozies, left hand and rights on bigger swell. Melros beach, reef on to beach needs bigger swell. Gearies, left hand reef break needs bigger swell 2 plus meters.


In summer all the above breaks are generally suitable for all levels of surfers.

Rottnest Island
Located 19 km of the Perth coast Rottnest has Some of the best surfing conditions in Western Australia. Strickland Bay, Salmon Bay and Stark Bay in particular are popular reef breaks for surfers and bodyboarders. In fact, Strickland Bay has been ranked in the top 50 breaks in the world. Rottnest Island is a popular surfing spot for Perth locals, with various reef breaks on both sides of the Island including Radar Reef, Cathedral Rocks and Chicken Reef. Waves off Rottnest can often be two to three feet larger than those at Perth beaches.


Rottnest is a 30 min ferry ride which can be reached from Perth, Fremantle or Hillarys Harbour. Rottnest Island is a special place for Western Australians and a popular destination for interstate and international visitors. The Mediterranean-style climate and indigenous flora and fauna of this Island provide the backdrop to a special holiday experience or day trip.

Margaret River – South West Western Australia
Margaret River WA was originally a chilled out surfie town, but has evolved into the ultimate smorgasbord of fine wine, good food and spectacular scenery – just a three-and-a-half hour drive south of Perth. No trip to Western Australia is complete without a pit stop at Margaret River.

There's a fine supply of world-class wineries, boutique breweries, and restaurants overlooking sweeping vineyards and surf breaks. There is probably around 20 world class quality surf breaks arround the Margaret River area which range from reef to beach and large to smaller size waves.
But be aware the Surf can be among the most powerful and dangerous in the world.
